If you want to re-discover the passion in caring

III.”PAF” Conference – Passion and science in healthcare

„Our mission is to restore the passion and self-respect of healthcare providers. We improve the cooperation between hospitals and the relationship between patients and healthcare workers. Our aim is to strengthen the self-healing capability of the organisations acting in the healthcare system”

Andrea Mezei, President of PAF Foundation

PAF foundation is committed to raising awareness and further development of the healing power of human relationships – focusing on organisations acting within the healthcare system. This is the third conference organised by the foundation for a more humane public health system in 2017.

Our personal experience has been already proven by scientific researches: human healing and compassion have a positive impact on both the healthcare workers and patients’ recovery.

Compassion reduces pain
After an empathetic per-op consultation, patients have better surgical outcomes, better wound healing, use half the dose of morhine and go home earlier (randomised controlled trials).

Compassion reduces health costs
Total costs of healthcare in the whole system are 30% lower when the primary care doctor provides ’above median’ patient-centered care.

In major causes of death like heart disease, the difference in death rates between pessimists and optimists is about as big as the difference between smokers and non-smokers.

We, the organisers and speakers of the conference firmly believe that the passion - that has faded in the daily practice - can be restored.

Our star speaker this year is the world famous apostle of compassionate care, Dr. Robin Youngson (New Zealand)
who is an anesthesiologist and founder of the international „Hearts in Healthcare” movement.

We invite the participants (healing teams, physicians,  nurses) to joint learning and knowledge sharing led by Robin Youngson and 15 highly committed Hungarian healthcare specialists. It will be worth it, as a healthcare professional is one of the most incredible jobs in the world.

Our aim is to restore the passion of care.

Robin Youngson is a fascinating speaker and trainer who inspires the audience through his own experience and stories. He (also as a WHO advisor) facilitates hospital development projects, workshops and motivating lectures around the world, from the UK to the USA. Robin Youngson comes to Central Europe for the first time thanks to an invitation from PAF.

Dr. Robin Youngson

  • Robin is an anesthesiologist trained in the UK and practising in New Zealand for the last twenty years.
  • 1991 – he publishes his first book, „Operation! A handbook for surgical patients”.
  • 1996 – he designs a patient-focused development program at Auckland Hospital
  • 2004 – his daughter is seriously injured in a car crash therefore she spends 3 months in hospital. His personal experience as a relative generated a refreshed drive for his engagement in the fight for a more humane healthcare. He initiates a movement aiming a new approach, allowing relatives to stay with the patients around the clock instead of the limited time of visiting hours.
  • 2006 – he becomes  on of the International Steering Committee Members  of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Patient Safety.
  • He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Compassionate Healthcare
  • He is a Fellow of the Global Empathy Committee
  • He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Department of Psychological Medicine of the University of Auckland
  • 2012 – he establishes the program „Hearts in healthcare” with his wife, Meredith Youngson
  • 2012 – his book „Time to care - How to love your patients and you job” - is published
  • 2016 -  he receives the most prestigious award of the New Zealand Medical Association
  • 2016 – „From HERO to HEALER – Awakening the Inner Activist” - is published

His approach and philosophy: according to his experience, the majority of healthcare institutions suffer from a downward spiral driven by stress and disappointment of the employees. However, there is another process, just as strong as the previous one: the upward spiral based on positive attitude, care and resilience. Everyone can decide which way to go.

What is the reason behind that despite of several institutional difficulties there are some healthcare professionals that arrive to work with a smile on their faces every single day?

He is frequently invited to international conferences and seminars to support the attainment of this positive attitude.  On these events he develops and improves the audience’s consciousness and empathy via interactive workshops. Thanks to the internal satisfaction triggered by the engaging experience of human relationships and renewed collaborations with patients, healthcare workers can acquire a positive and stable attitude.

Robin is a fascinating speaker and trainer who inspires the audience through his own experience and stories. He gives inspirational lectures and workshops around the world, from the UK to the USA.

He arrives in Central Europe for the first time to share his knowledge and inspire the healthcare professionals and decision makers.
